Lymphoedema

Management and treatment of lymphoedema through our best allied health professionals

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues, most commonly affecting the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to adequately drain lymph fluid, resulting in fluid build-up and swelling.

Lymphoedema may be:

  • Primary – due to a congenital or inherited condition affecting the lymphatic system
  • Secondary – caused by damage to the lymphatic system, often following surgery, radiation therapy, infection, or trauma

Common Symptoms:

  • Swelling in limbs, fingers, or toes
  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Reduced flexibility or mobility in affected areas
  • Aching, discomfort, or recurrent infections
  • Thickening or hardening of the skin (fibrosis)

Management & Treatment of Lymphoedema

While lymphoedema cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed with early intervention and a multidisciplinary approach. Management strategies are tailored to the individual and may include:

Key Treatment Approaches:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, specialised massage that helps stimulate lymph flow and reduce swelling.
  • Compression Therapy: The use of compression garments or bandaging to support lymph fluid movement and minimise fluid build-up.
  • Exercise: Prescribed movement and physical activity to improve lymph drainage and maintain joint function.
  • Skin Care: Preventing infections through meticulous hygiene and moisturising, as the skin is more prone to breakdown and cellulitis.
  • Education and Self-Management: Teaching individuals how to monitor and care for their condition at home.

Role of Allied Health Professionals

Managing lymphoedema requires a collaborative team of allied health professionals. Each plays a crucial role in supporting patients through individualised treatment plans:

  • Occupational Therapists: Assist with garment fitting and functional adaptations to daily tasks
